Rules: The car/truck had to be sold brand new in 1976
I would take a Jeep Wagoneer. I could see the country in massive style or go anywhere and do anything. One of the most handsome SUVs of all time.
What would you buy Oppo?

In the same vein as my decisions up to this point, something affordable, interesting, and “oh sure, we know it’s a bad idea now ”, I propose the ‘76 Pacer X.
There were already in the pipeline some noises about mods, and in the late 70s there was a conversion available to a 401 V8. YUSS.

Here’s what my dad actually bought:
1976 Pontiac Grand LeMans. Not IN 1976, but he bought one as a second car once we had enough money. His was silver, and he had a dark blue vinyl top added, because that was the thing to do back then apparently. I took a couple of trips from MA to FL in the back seat of that car as a kid.

It’s way too heavy for what it is, and in ‘76 you could still only get it with a straight six, so performance was abysmal. However, everything AMC was pretty much swappable, so even before the factory 340 option you *could* have put a V8 in it with only some difficulty.

So many choices. The Accord debuted that year (as a hatch!), there was the early Celica, the 280Z was around but a bit heavy for what it was, the Countach was at its best...think I’ll go with a classic 911.

I just realized that ‘76 was the first year for Australian CL Chrysler Valiant which means I could’ve had a Drifter too.
