Rules: The car/truck had to be sold brand new in 1976
I would take a Jeep Wagoneer. I could see the country in massive style or go anywhere and do anything. One of the most handsome SUVs of all time.
What would you buy Oppo?

In the same vein as my decisions up to this point, something affordable, interesting, and “oh sure, we know it’s a bad idea now ”, I propose the ‘76 Pacer X.
There were already in the pipeline some noises about mods, and in the late 70s there was a conversion available to a 401 V8. YUSS.

Here’s what my dad actually bought:
1976 Pontiac Grand LeMans. Not IN 1976, but he bought one as a second car once we had enough money. His was silver, and he had a dark blue vinyl top added, because that was the thing to do back then apparently. I took a couple of trips from MA to FL in the back seat of that car as a kid.
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:01 |

I think I would take this over a Bora but the point is moot because I would take a Countach over either.

I mean I guess it looked better than the 76 Quattroporte

No wait I wanna change my answer. 1976 was the last year of the Jensen Interceptor.

![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:09 |

No, a V8. The Merak (which was identical from the doors forwards) had a V6.

![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:13 |

Adorable with that flat tire
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:13 |

Looks sweet, but I think it would have been considered slow with “only” 105 hp in standard form. They were fairly lightweight and good handling though.
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:16 |
|
It’s way too heavy for what it is, and in ‘76 you could still only get it with a straight six, so performance was abysmal. However, everything AMC was pretty much swappable, so even before the factory 340 option you *could* have put a V8 in it with only some difficulty.

215, and yes. First gen/3.5 Rover V8. Has a couple big flaws like a really crummy oil pump, but still has potential.

Thankfully you didn’t say it had to be sold in the US.
1976 Ford Falcon XB GT with 351 Cleveland
God I love these cars. Maybe I’ll actually import one at some point.
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:20 |

So many choices. The Accord debuted that year (as a hatch!), there was the early Celica, the 280Z was around but a bit heavy for what it was, the Countach was at its best...think I’ll go with a classic 911.
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:22 |

They did make rather many of those, some companies even made multiple different models.
I just realized that ‘76 was the first year for Australian CL Chrysler Valiant which means I could’ve had a Drifter too.
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:25 |
|
Oh that clears things up
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:26 |

215, but yeah (with a couple of production modificatiosn from Rover that made it more reliable but heavier). Not a particularly hot in stock format but can be taken out quite a ways :)
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:27 |
|
I think a 340 in this car might have been a popular option. Sure it wouldn’t have been great on gas but we Americans love our V8s

ADVENTURE TIME ALL THE THINGS!!!
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:28 |

I considered picking one of these. If I would have been around in 76 is would have been a Benz or a Lincoln Continental if I wanted four door luxury
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:28 |

This car is so undervalued
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:29 |

215! Not 235. I knew is was in the ball park. It might have had flaws but all aluminum was probably a big deal when it came out
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:29 |
|
WANT!! I cannot believe these did not get sold in the US they are awesome
![]() 05/04/2016 at 10:30 |

Maybe an LP400 Countach, an Espada or a Monteverdi 375 L High Speed. I hope I could afford these as they were all extremely expensive.
